Exploring Neighborhood Influences on Small-Area Variations in Intimate Partner Violence Risk: A Bayesian Random-Effects Modeling Approach

چکیده
This paper uses spatial data of cases of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) to examine neighborhood-level influences on small-area variations in IPVAW risk in a police district of the city of Valencia (Spain). To analyze area variations in IPVAW risk and its association with neighborhood-level explanatory variables we use a Bayesian spatial random-effects modeling approach, as well as disease mapping methods to represent risk probabilities in each area. Analyses show that IPVAW cases are more likely in areas of high immigrant concentration, high public disorder and crime, and high physical disorder. Results also show a spatial component indicating remaining variability attributable to spatially structured random effects. Bayesian spatial modeling offers a new perspective to identify IPVAW high and low risk areas, and provides a new avenue for the design of better-informed prevention and intervention strategies.

Original Contribution The Spatial Epidemiologyof Intimate Partner Violence: DoNeighborhoodsMatter?
We examined whether neighborhood-level characteristics influence spatial variations in the risk of intimate partner violence (IPV). Geocoded data on IPV cases with associated protection orders (n = 1,623) in the city of Valencia, Spain (2011–2013), were used for the analyses. Neighborhood units were 552 census block groups. Drawing from social disorganization theory, we explored 3 types of cont...
متن کاملSynergistic Effects of Depression and Poor Impulse Control on Physical Partner Violence; A National Longitudinal Study in United States
Background: Although major depressive disorder (MDD) also increases the risk of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) perpetration, poor mental health has been mostly conceptualized as a consequence of IPV victimization rather than a risk factor for IPV perpetration. Poor impulse control is another IPV risk factor. Building on a risk / risk framework, this study investigates additive and multiplicati...
متن کاملPnm-7: Intimate Partner Violence and Antenatal Depression among Pregnant Women in Iran
Background: Domestic violence against women is a significant public health issue in both developed and developing countries of the world. Intimate partner violence during pregnancy can result in adverse outcomes for both mothers and their infants. Partner violence against women is common during pregnancy and might have an adverse effect on the mental health of women during antenatal pregnancy. ...
متن کاملNeighborhood Predictors of Intimate Partner Violence: A Theory-Informed Analysis Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling.
Due to high prevalence rates and deleterious effects on individuals, families, and communities, intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health problem. Because IPV occurs in the context of communities and neighborhoods, research must examine the broader environment in addition to individual-level factors to successfully facilitate behavior change. Drawing from the Social Determi...
متن کاملModeling of Psychotic Experiences in Abused Women in Relation to Intimate Partner Violence: The Mediating Role of Temperament and Character Dimensions
Introduction: Although the relationship between intimate partner violence and the psychotic experiences of abused women has been investigated, less attention has been paid to the mediating factors of this relationship. So, the present study was carried out to develop and propose a model for psychotic experiences related with intimate partner violence among abused women, while considering the m...
